While many Pilates exercises can be conducted in a "mat" class, a signature of the Pilates method is the specialized equipment used in the performance of Pilates excersises. The equipment, or "apparatus," is designed to aide one's balance while moving through the exercises, and often to provide extra resistance, enhancing the effectiveness of the workout.

A variety of equipment is used in a well furnished Pilates studio. Your instructor will guide you in the use of the equipment and determine the best choice of equipment for each of your workouts.
